The proposed expansion at Angul will add 500,000 tonnes of annual smelting capacity, with commissioning targeted for 2030–31.
National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) has reported progress on its proposed ₹30,000-crore brownfield smelter expansion at Angul, Odisha, with key approvals and partnerships in place, according to its 4 November 2026 announcement.
The project will add 0.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), taking the company’s smelting capacity from 0.46 MTPA to approximately 1 MTPA.
NALCO has entered into a technology-licensing agreement with Emirates Global Aluminium. To support the expansion’s power requirements, it has partnered with NLC India for a 50:50 joint venture to develop a 1,080 MW captive thermal power plant, comprising four 270 MW units. It also envisages integrating 200–250 MW of renewable energy.
Land acquisition, compensation and rehabilitation matters are being advanced through the relevant state committee. Commissioning of the smelter expansion is targeted for 2030–31.
The announcement is a progress update on an approved investment programme; it does not confirm commissioning or completion of land acquisition.
