Location: Tamalwadi, Maharashtra
Industry: Specialty Chemicals
Focus: Heat recovery and energy efficiency
Balaji Amines manufactures specialty chemicals and aliphatic amines. At its operations in Maharashtra, heat recovery became an area where the company could reduce energy use while supporting its production processes. Balaji Amines confirms Tamalwadi as one of its manufacturing locations.
According to a case study published by Alfa Laval, Balaji Amines initially replaced conventional carbon-steel shell-and-tube heat exchangers with eight compact welded heat exchangers for heat-recovery duties in amine production.
The technology was subsequently expanded across the company’s operations. Alfa Laval reports that Balaji Amines later had 48 compact heat exchangers, along with other heat-exchanger types, being used for duties including condensation, reboiling, vaporisation and cooling.
Alfa Laval states that the initial installation of eight units laid the foundation for approximately USD 700,000 in annual savings.
The supplier also identifies benefits including compact equipment footprint, lower maintenance requirements and suitability for demanding process conditions.
The case highlights the potential value of looking at recoverable process heat as an energy resource rather than allowing it to leave the process unused.
It also shows how a technology can first be applied to a limited duty and then expanded after operational experience has been gained.
