IndianOil’s Gujarat Refinery Prepares for Polypropylene Production

Indian Oil Corporation’s Gujarat Refinery at Koyali is expected to begin polypropylene production by the end of FY27 as part of the refinery’s ongoing capacity expansion and integration with petrochemical manufacturing.

The new polypropylene unit is designed for a capacity of around 500,000 tonnes per year. It will use propylene produced through IndianOil’s INDMAX technology, which is designed to maximise propylene yield from refinery feedstock.

The development forms part of a broader programme to increase the refinery’s crude-processing capacity from around 13.7 million tonnes per annum to 18 million tonnes per annum.

Several new units have already been commissioned under the expansion programme, including a vacuum distillation unit and a lube-oil base-stock unit. Secondary processing facilities are expected to support sustained operation at the expanded capacity.

The polypropylene unit is expected to increase the refinery’s petrochemical output and strengthen integration between refining and downstream materials production.

The move also supports IndianOil’s strategy of increasing the share of petrochemicals in its product portfolio while reducing dependence on imported polypropylene.
