JSW Steel has commenced development of a 13.2 million tonnes per annum greenfield integrated steel plant at Paradeep in Odisha.
The project represents an estimated investment of around ₹65,000 crore and is being developed across approximately 2,950 acres.
The plant is expected to become one of the largest new industrial projects in Odisha and will significantly increase the state’s steelmaking capacity.
The proposed facility is being developed as an integrated steel complex, bringing multiple stages of the steel production process together within a single industrial site.
An integrated steel plant requires extensive infrastructure covering raw-material handling, ironmaking, steelmaking, casting and rolling, along with power, water, transportation and environmental systems.
The Paradeep location also provides access to port infrastructure, which is important for handling large volumes of raw materials and finished products.
The development is part of JSW Steel’s broader expansion strategy as the company seeks to increase its overall production capacity.
India’s steel industry is simultaneously seeing major investments from public-sector and private-sector producers as companies respond to rising domestic demand and the government’s target of increasing national steel capacity.
Greenfield projects of this scale require several years of engineering, procurement and construction activity.
Equipment packages typically include large mechanical systems, material-handling equipment, furnaces, pumps, compressors, valves, piping, electrical systems, instrumentation and automation.
The project is also expected to create significant construction and operational employment in Odisha.
The development will add to the state’s existing industrial ecosystem, which includes steel, aluminium, mining, power and port-related industries.
As construction progresses, the project is expected to generate activity across engineering contractors, equipment manufacturers, EPC companies and specialist industrial service providers.
The Paradeep project is one of the major greenfield steel developments currently being undertaken in India and is expected to play a significant role in the country’s longer-term steel capacity expansion.
