GAIL and RCF Plan Gas-Based Fertiliser Plant in Maharashtra August 2026

GAIL and Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF) have entered into a preliminary agreement to establish a joint venture for setting up a gas-based fertiliser plant in Vidarbha, Maharashtra.

The proposed project is aimed at increasing domestic fertiliser production while making use of natural gas as the primary feedstock.

The agreement represents an early step towards development of the proposed facility, with further work required on project planning, feasibility, investment structure and execution.

Gas-based fertiliser plants require a complex combination of process units, utilities and supporting infrastructure. Natural gas is used as the primary feedstock in the production process, with ammonia and urea forming the core of a conventional gas-based fertiliser complex.

A project of this scale would typically require ammonia and urea production facilities, steam and power systems, cooling water systems, water treatment, storage facilities, material handling, instrumentation and process control systems.

The availability of natural gas is an important factor in determining the viability of such projects. GAIL’s participation provides a potential link between gas supply infrastructure and fertiliser manufacturing.

RCF is one of India’s major fertiliser and chemical producers and operates manufacturing facilities in Maharashtra.

The proposed project is expected to support fertiliser availability in the region and contribute to the development of additional industrial infrastructure in Vidarbha.

India has been investing in additional domestic fertiliser capacity in an effort to reduce dependence on imports and strengthen supply security.

New fertiliser plants also create demand across the engineering and industrial supply chain, including process equipment, compressors, pumps, valves, piping, instrumentation, electrical systems, automation and environmental-control systems.

Once the project moves beyond the preliminary stage, decisions around technology selection, project configuration, capacity and investment will determine the scale of the facility.

The proposed Vidarbha plant is therefore one of several developments being watched as India continues to expand domestic fertiliser manufacturing capacity.
